Discover Your Core — Affirming Values and Reframing Limitations
Your Core Values: The Foundation of Your Path
There comes a moment in every person’s journey when they must ask: What do I stand for? Your core values are not just words; they are the invisible force that shapes your decisions, direction, and identity. Without them, you drift, making choices based on impulse, fear, or external pressure. When your values are clear, decision-making becomes effortless, and your actions gain a sense of purpose and conviction.
I first encountered the power of values in 2008 at Microsoft. I had the privilege of being part of the Microsoft High-Potential Program, an elite two-year leadership development initiative. One of our first workshops challenged us to articulate our top values. We were given value cards to sort through, reflect on, and ultimately proclaim the three to five values that defined us. I still have those cards today. They became a compass for my most important decisions. When I aligned my actions with my values, I moved forward with confidence. When I strayed, I felt disconnected and lacked authenticity. My values guided decisions on jobs, earning two graduate degrees, the work I do today, and even ending a 20+ year marriage. This month, you will learn how to discover and embody your values.
The Power of Belief: Affirming Yourself
Your values define the structure of your life, but belief is the fuel that powers it. Every great vision demands an unwavering belief in yourself. Yet, the enemy of belief lurks in the shadows—self-limiting thoughts that whisper doubt, reminding you why you can’t, why you shouldn’t, why you must stay small.
For years, I carried these voices with me. They were constant companions, always ready to remind me of my limitations. But I learned something transformative: those voices were not truth; they were fear masquerading as reason. The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer describes this inner critic as the "Inner Roommate"—a voice that chatters endlessly, often reinforcing our doubts and insecurities. Once I recognized it for what it was, I realized that I had a choice. I could listen and shrink, or I could affirm my power and push forward.
Reframing Limitations: The Art of Self-Mastery
Your limitations are not fixed; they are only as powerful as the meaning you give them. The ability to reframe is one of the most important mental tools you can develop. When you hear the voice of doubt, ask yourself: Is this true? More often than not, the answer is no. It is simply a conditioned response—a fear-based reaction shaped by past failures, external expectations, or outdated narratives about what you are capable of achieving.
Reframing is not about blind positivity; it is about shifting your perspective to see challenges as opportunities for growth. If you have been telling yourself, I'm not ready, reframe it to, I'm becoming ready through action. If you think, I don't belong here, shift it to, I am earning my place with every step I take. The difference between those who achieve their vision and those who remain stuck is not talent—it is the ability to rewrite the story they tell themselves.
February: A Month of Strengthening Your Core
This month, I challenge you to do two things:
Clarify and affirm your values. Reconnect with what matters most. Write them down. Adopt behaviors and make decisions that align with them.
Recognize and reframe self-limiting beliefs. Observe the voices of doubt and remind yourself: I am in control. I choose what I believe.
When you live in alignment with your values and reinforce belief in yourself, you move through life with clarity, conviction, and momentum. This is not just theory—this is the foundation for everything you will accomplish.
Your journey begins now. Discover your core. Stand firm in your values. Reframe the limitations that no longer serve you.
